This week we have experienced a deeply formative experience. We enthusiastically celebrated Bible Week at our institution, dedicating significant time and resources to commemorating the Protestant Reformation. Our students immersed themselves in the study of the five solas, the foundational pillars that uphold the historic faith. This immersion allowed every student to discover and deeply understand the historical and theological importance of principles like Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria. Undoubtedly, it was an essential learning experience that honors the rich heritage of the Reformation and strengthens the character of our young people.
📜 Sola Scriptura: The Bible as Our Sole Authority
In a world full of competing voices and philosophies, it is fundamental that our children identify an unchanging source of truth. Therefore, the study of Sola Scriptura (“Scripture Alone”) was the starting point of our celebration.
At our institution, we do not just teach students to read the Bible; we instruct them to study it critically and to apply it as the final authority for faith and practice. For instance, at the secondary level, students in Comparative Theology analyzed how this principle transformed education and society by making biblical knowledge available to common people. Furthermore, bilingual learning enhances this study, allowing students to access commentaries and texts in multiple languages, deepening their understanding of the original text. This approach ensures that biblical principles are rooted not only in memory, but also in the heart and intellect.
🙏 Sola Fide and Sola Gratia: The Gift of Faith and Grace
The beauty of the Reformation lies in its clarity on salvation. Sola Fide (“Faith Alone”) and Sola Gratia (“Grace Alone”) were presented as two inseparable concepts that define our relationship with God.
- Sola Gratia teaches our students that God’s love is an undeserved gift. Consequently, this fosters humility and gratitude in their daily lives. Social Studies teachers discussed how the understanding of grace impacts social interactions, promoting empathy and service to others.
- Sola Fide emphasizes that faith is the only instrument for receiving this grace. Thus, we encourage our students to develop an active personal faith, which manifests in their academic choices and ethical behavior. This pillar is vital for Christian families in Costa Rica, as it ensures that children’s faith is personal and not just inherited.
👑 Solus Christus: Jesus as Our Only Mediator
The heart of the Christian faith is the person of Jesus Christ. Solus Christus (“Christ Alone”) is a pillar that centralizes all the teaching of our institution in His redemptive work.
During Bible Week, elementary students participated in creative art and writing projects, where they explored Jesus’ role not only as Savior, but as the supreme model of leadership and service. Therefore, this principle guarantees that our values-based education program is anchored in the example of Christ. In our classrooms, children learn to see Jesus as the only way to the Father, eliminating any dependence on human merits or intermediaries. In this way, we develop young people with a clear and strong spiritual identity.
🎶 Soli Deo Gloria: A Life for the Glory of God
The climax of the immersion in the Five Solas was the study of Soli Deo Gloria (“Glory to God Alone”). This principle encompasses and directs all others.
This foundational pillar transforms our students’ perspective on success. Often, the world defines success by wealth or status; we teach that the purpose of all human activity —from a math exam to community service— is to honor God. Students in the music and art programs, for example, shared their talents in a special recital, dedicating each piece to the glory of God. Consequently, this focus inspires excellence and purpose in all areas of life, preparing our graduates to be influential leaders who serve their community and Costa Rica with integrity and dedication.
