Have you ever wondered how children can grasp the grandeur of the universe around us? At our school, we believe the best way to learn is through experiences that inspire awe and curiosity. Recently, our first-grade students had the wonderful opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Earth, the planets, the Moon, and other celestial bodies that make up our solar system. This educational journey not only reinforced what they had learned in the classroom, but also allowed them to marvel at the beauty and precision of God’s creation.

Science Class Comes to Life: The UCR Planetarium

During classroom lessons, our students have been exploring the fundamentals of the cosmos. We’ve talked about the Earth’s rotation, the phases of the Moon, and the movement of the planets. However, seeing these ideas in a textbook doesn’t compare to the experience of living them. That’s why we organized a visit to the Planetarium of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), a place where starry skies and the mysteries of the universe are shown with stunning clarity.

At the planetarium, our little explorers were able to see more clearly what they had been studying. The planetarium’s dome became a vast ceiling of stars, projecting the planets in their constant motion and the Moon in its various stages. The children were left speechless as they saw how sunlight illuminates one half of the Moon, creating the different phases we see from Earth. This moment was truly fascinating, as they were able to connect what they read with an impressive visual representation.

Marveling at Creation

As a school with Christian values, we always seek to connect academic learning with a perspective of faith. This visit was a perfect opportunity to show the children the magnificence of the Creator. In Genesis 1:16, the Bible tells us: “God made the two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” Seeing the complexity and order of the celestial bodies helped them understand that the entire universe is a masterpiece designed by an infinitely wise and powerful being.

The students not only saw the planets, but also learned about their movements and how they affect life on Earth. They were delighted to see how the Earth’s movement gives us the beautiful sunrises and sunsets we enjoy every day. It’s in these small details, like the transition from day to night, that we can see the perfection of God’s creation.

Beyond Textbooks: Experiential Learning

At our school, experiential learning is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. We believe that field trips and hands-on activities are essential for students to develop a deeper and more meaningful understanding of topics. An excursion like this, which combines science with faith, reinforces the idea that there is no division between knowledge of the natural world and our faith. The entire universe, from the smallest cell to the largest galaxy, speaks to us of a Creator.

A Bright Future Starts Here

Learning is a journey, and with every step, we aim to inspire our students to be curious thinkers, compassionate leaders, and people of faith. Through this trip to the cosmos, our first-grade students not only gained scientific knowledge but also strengthened their faith by witnessing the majesty of creation. If you are looking for an education that values both intellect and character, we invite you to get to know us.
